Last week a countdown timer went up on Planescape.com which had fans of the 1999 Infinity Engine RPG excited to see what was planned for this cult classic. Those cheeky folks over at Beamdog had been drawing attention to the site on their Twitter as well, and seeing as they're the ones responsible for all the enhanced ports of Infinity Engine classics which has brought the likes of Baldur's Gate [$9.99], Baldur's Gate II [$9.99], and Icewind Dale [$9.99] to our mobile devices, it seemed like a pretty safe bet that they'd be announcing an enhanced version of Planescape: Torment. Well, there's still about 4 hours left on the countdown as of this writing, but it looks like the cat is out of the bag early as noted by PC Gamer and indeed there is a Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition port in our futures.
We might have to wait for the countdown to actually finish and some press releases to be sent out before we get any significant details on what Planescape: Torment EE will entail, but just this trailer has spilled some beans and is more than enough to get excited for. Besides high resolution and widescreen support, Planescape: Torment EE will include a revamped UI and a remixed soundtrack. Perhaps most exciting of all is that the game's original designer Chris Avellone is working with Beamdog on this enhanced port and it sounds like there might even be some new content included. Whether that's finishing off some of the half-finished quests from the game's original development or creating entirely new content as they did with Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear remains to be seen.
Either way we'll be getting an updated and hopefully more consistent and less buggy way to play this classic on Windows, Mac, and Linux desktops with the added bonus of being able to take it with us on iOS and Android devices. Sounds like a win to me! When more details for Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition are revealed we'll let you know.
