By far the best cars in Need for Speed Payback are the Derelicts, knackered old chassis that you’ll need to find and restore.
The chassis and parts are hidden all over Fortune City, and it’s no easy task to find them. But once you do find them and put them back together, you’ll have one seriously hot ride.
There are five pieces to collect for each Derelict; the chassis, wheels, engine and drivetrain, accessories and body parts. Once you have those five for each vehicle you can rebuild it from Scrap to Stock.
You have to find the chassis before you receive any clues as to where the other four parts are hidden, and the chassis doesn’t become available until you advanced to a certain point in the main story mission or completed a set of races, so don’t go off looking for them before then as they won’t be on the map.
The clues you’re given are useful as they come in the form of photographs showing the general area and a crop of the map. There’s also a handy radar beep that gets faster the closer you get to the parts, so listen out for that over the roaring of your engine.
Once you have all the parts, you have the option to turn any of the five Derelicts into any car class in the game; race, offroad, draft, runner or drag.
Once you’ve made your choice you can’t turn it back, so make sure you’re doubly sure about your build. Having said that, once you’ve completed a Derelict the original stock version of that car becomes available in the appropriate dealership.
The five derelicts are; Chevrolet Bel Air 1955, Ford Mustang 1965, NISSAN Fairlady ZG 1971, Chevrolet C10 Stepside Pickup 1965 and the Volkswagen Beetle 1963
Here’s where you can find them and all their parts, thanks to this excellent and clear video by HarryNinteyFour. There’s a timestamp below listing where to jump to in the video, and also which missions and races you’ll need to complete before you can go looking for the Derelict.
You’ll want to use an off-roader to find them as most are hidden off the main roads and some involve hitting jumps to reach them.
Ford Mustang 1965
You’ll need Tyler to complete the Graveyard Shift races and the Graveyard Shift boss before the Ford Mustang becomes available.
