World War Z gets a four-player co-op survival game, adapts the film not the book

Another announcement from The Game Awards last night, World War Z is being adapted as a four-player co-op survival game “coming soon” to PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The game looks to take it takes most of its cues from the movie version of World War Z, starring Brad Pitt, rather than the novel by Max Brooks – which makes sense due to the apparent involvement of Paramount Pictures.

The suitably moody reveal trailer shows desolated landscapes from around the world, hinting at the variety of maps that might be on offer when the game drops.

World War Z is being developed by Saber Interactive, who’ve worked on third-person co-op shooter God Mode, a few other movie-licensed games, as well as arcadey basketball sim NBA Playgrounds.

“Saber has tons of experience working on high-quality games and they’ve done a great job capturing the massive, frantic hordes of zekes that sets our franchise apart,” said Bil Bertini, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Licensing for Paramount Pictures.

“They have created a fiercely original experience in the rich universe of World War Z that fans are sure to love.”

There’s no firm release date yet, but World War Z should be out in 2018.
