Pokemon Go broke down and made enormous amounts of cash anyway. So it goes.
Pokemon Go generated about $5.8 million in worldwide revenue on Sunday July 23, according to mobile analyst firm Sensor Tower.
That’s the largest single-day revenue outside of Pokemon Go’s unequalled, record-setting launch window. According to the linked report, Pokemon Go is currently the number one app for revenue on iPhone in 23 countries, having returned to the US top slot for the first time since April.
The huge spike in spending came about because Niantic finally added Legendaries to Pokemon Go. This long-anticipated update unfortunately coincided with the embarrassingly bad first Pokemon Go Fest event.
The rubbish performance of the app during the event saw Niantic hand out rewards to all Pokemon Go players, extend the redemption period and rethink future Pokemon Go events to avoid the network issues that made Pokemon Go unplayable on site.
The event being such a pratfall seems to have stirred up all the usual talk about how nobody plays Pokemon Go any more, as if it hadn’t sold out almost instantly. This latest news about Pokemon Go’s revenues rather puts paid to that chatter, doesn’t it?
