PS4 sales fall slightly in Sony’s first quarter of FY 2017

Sony has published its earnings report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2017.

The April 1 – June 30 period saw a bit of a disappointing outcome as far as PS4 sales are concerned, compared to the same period last year.

3.3 million units were shipped in this quarter, compared to 3.5 million in FY 2016. Sony attributed this to price drops and the absence of a “highly profitable first-party title” in the period, which could be a reference to Uncharted 4. Horizon Zero Dawn’s release date puts it outside this period.

This brings the total number of PS4 units shipped to 63.3 million.

The drop in units shipped also affects the forecast for the rest of the fiscal year, as Sony now expects to ship 18 million units by the end of it, compared to the 20 million it’s shipped the previous year.

Though PS4 sales were down, the Games & Network division saw a 5.4% increase in sales compared to the same quarter last year. This was due to PlayStation VR, and digital game sales through the store.

Though it was a generally profitable quarter for the company, Sony still did not mention PlayStation VR and PS4 Pro sales data in any of its releases today.
